Grand piano microphone placement for clear, natural recordings

A grand piano can fill a track with depth, brightness and remarkable dynamic range, but its size makes microphone placement more involved than simply pointing a microphone at the strings. The lid, soundboard, frame and room all affect what reaches the capsule. A small adjustment can change the balance from warm and rounded to sharp, boomy or overly percussive.

For Australian artists working in styles from jazz and classical crossover to indie pop, film music and contemporary worship, the right placement depends on the finished production. A solo piano needs a convincing sense of space, while a piano supporting vocals or a full band may need more definition and less low-end wash. Start with the room and the instrument

Before choosing a microphone pair, listen to the piano from the position where the audience or listener is meant to be. Open the lid to its full stick, short stick or closed position and compare the tone from several points around the instrument. The full stick usually produces the most projection, but it can also expose harsh high frequencies and make the room’s reflections more obvious.

A grand piano sounds different near the tail, near the keyboard and beyond the curve of the baffle. The tail often delivers a broad, powerful image with plenty of bass energy. The keyboard side can provide a more direct connection to the player and clearer attack. From a distance, the soundboard and room blend together, which may be ideal for a solo recital but less useful when the piano must sit behind a vocalist.

Room treatment is as important as microphone quality. Hard walls and windows can create a brittle reflection a few milliseconds after the direct sound, while an untreated corner can exaggerate low notes. Large-diaphragm condensers can provide a fuller, smoother character, especially when the instrument needs warmth beneath a vocal or string arrangement.

Omnidirectional microphones capture a more open low end and tend to sound less coloured when placed close to the strings. Cardioid microphones offer greater control over spill and room reflections, which is useful in a busy recording session. A spaced pair can sound expansive, but timing differences between the microphones may create phase problems when the recording is summed to mono. Mid-side recording is another flexible option because the width can be adjusted during mixing.

Try placement positions with a clear purpose

Aim one microphone towards the bass section and the other towards the treble section, but avoid pointing directly at the hammers unless a very percussive sound is wanted. Moving the microphones closer to the centre of the instrument often creates a more even blend, while moving them towards the tail can increase power and low-frequency weight.

A position near the curve of the piano, looking across the strings, can produce a wide and polished pop sound. It often captures enough attack to help the piano remain audible through guitars, drums and synthesizers. For a softer result, move the microphones farther from the hammers or partially under the lid. This reduces the sharpest mechanical noises and allows more of the soundboard’s resonance to develop.

A pair outside the piano can sound more like a listener sitting in the room. Begin between one and two metres away, around the height of the open lid, and adjust the distance while monitoring the sustain pedal and bass response. This approach is often attractive for solo performance, chamber music and sparse singer-songwriter arrangements. It can become indistinct in a dense mix, especially if the room has a long or uneven reverberation.

For an intimate, modern piano tone, a single microphone placed above the bass and middle strings may be enough. A second microphone near the treble strings can add definition, but it should be introduced gradually. Over-miking creates a close, impressive sound in headphones that may become aggressive when combined with compression, bright vocals or acoustic guitar. The best placement is the one that needs the least corrective equalisation.

Control phase, spill and unwanted mechanical noise

Once the microphones are in position, listen in mono as well as stereo. If the piano loses body, sounds hollow or develops an unstable centre when summed, adjust the spacing and angle. X/Y is usually forgiving because both capsules occupy nearly the same point, whereas spaced microphones require more attention to distance. The three-to-one rule can help when using separate microphones: keep each microphone at least three times farther from the other source than it is from its intended source, although the piano’s large soundboard means this is only a starting guide.

Use headphones to check for pedal noise, bench movement, music-page turns and the thump of the pianist’s feet. These sounds may seem quiet during a performance but become prominent after compression. Ask the player to test the sustain pedal before recording and check whether the mechanism needs servicing. Spill matters when other performers are in the room. If a vocalist is recording at the same time, orient the piano microphones so their least sensitive sides face the singer where possible. In a jazz trio, the piano may need enough left-hand weight to support the bass while retaining the attack that defines the player’s articulation.
